SPARROWS

LA FRERE

Three sparrows came to perch

Upon a dusty sill to christen

One chattered on about morality

while another celebrated sin

One begged me to listen quietly

While the others birthed the din

I chose to close my eyes instead

To drown the sound of crude beaks

chipped and biting,

pecking and delighting

Feathers ruffled to catch the light.

So I had my kitten come

And chase the birds away

The feathers beaks and claws

Had left my sill for better

Once more I had returned

To the silence of repose.

Until the birds come back to settle

Make nests of tussled thoughts

I should think upon a rose,

And leave those birds to rot
